Disposing of Your Electronic Media

Ontario’s public institutions and health information custodians are required to take reasonable steps to safeguard personal information from the time of collection to the point of destruction. This means that personal information that is stored on digital media or devices must be securely destroyed to ensure it cannot be retrieved, reconstructed, or made accessible to others.

Today, the IPC released its latest fact sheet, Disposing of Your Electronic Media. This fact sheet outlines how to securely destroy personal information when disposing of electronic media. It explains the:

  • legal requirements, importance of, and challenges to, secure destruction of information stored on electronic media
  • methods of secure destruction for different media
  • essential elements of a data destruction program
  • factors to consider when using third parties to securely destroy personal information
