Commissioner Brian Beamish will update audience members on recent key developments in access and privacy at the provincial and territorial levels. This will include discussion of the implications of legislative changes in Ontario, Newfoundland & Labrador, and elsewhere. Significant court and commissioner decisions will be discussed, including the much-anticipated decision in Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta v. University of Calgary, now pending before the Supreme Court.

Assistant Commissioner David Goodis will look into records retention and the duty to document in the public sector, including improper records destruction, meaningful legislative or practical solutions, legislated duty to document and the value to government openness or accountability as well as the practical and legal challenges.

Director of Legal Services, Manuela Di Re, will discuss amended bills that will usher in significant changes to personal health information laws. For example, Ontario’s PHIPA. This session will compare how Canadian provinces are amending their laws with how Australia and the UK have configured and revised their EHR regimes.
