Accessing your information
The role of the Information and Privacy Commissioner is set out in four privacy and access laws: the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA), and Part X of the Child, Youth and Family Services Act (CYFSA). The IPC acts independently of government to uphold and promote open government and the protection of personal privacy.
Under these laws, you have the right to request access to your personal information or general information held by provincial and municipal government organizations, children’s aid societies and other child and family service providers. You also have the right to request a correction of your personal information.
In this section, you will learn more about how to access information, request a correction to your personal information, how to file an appeal, and the appeal process with our office.
